There’s A Second Brain In Your Gut

A “gut feeling” feeling about something may be more accurate than you think!

Your gastrointestinal tract (GI) has as many neurons (nerve cells) as a dog or cat, about 200 million. The need for so much brainpower, enough that scientists call your gut’s nervous system “The Second Brain”, is due to the complexity of digesting and absorbing nutrients from the wide array of food included in the Human diet.

The “Second Brain” is hardwired to your central nervous system and produces over 90% of our bodi’s hormone; Serotonin. Serotonin is the important neurotransmitter that helps your body regulate appetite, sleep, and mood!  Many of the most effective antidepressant drugs work by making Serotonin more available in your brain.

SuperBio’s scientists are closely following new research at McMaster University in Canada which found that probiotic bacteria in supplements like SuperBio can reduce depression symptoms in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) patients. GI problems like IBS can cause patients to suffer from depression at higher rates.

All the answers about the exact nature of the Brain – Gut – Probiotic bacteria connection will take more research.  But, it is clear that connection exists and a healthy gut supplemented with probiotics, like SuperBio, can play an important role in our physical and mental health.  Stay tuned for more information about how your Gut health affects your overall wellbeing!
